Founded in 2001, Trio Chausson has become a leading ensemble on both the French and international chamber music scenes. Celebrated for its poetic sensibility and refined interpretations, the ensemble drew the attention as the winner of the International Chamber Music Competition Joseph Joachim in Weimar 2005 and “Rising Star” in 2007.
Trio Chausson has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall in London, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Orsay Museum, the Auditorium of the Louvre, the Grand Opéra d’Avignon, the Grand Théâtre of d’Angers, and Salle Gaveau in Paris. They have also performed at major festivals such as La Roque d’Anthéron, Lisztomanias in Châteauroux, and in international venues like the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Moscow Conservatory. The Trio is also a regular guest at the Folles Journées festivals in Nantes, Tokyo, and Warsaw.
Their discography, released under the Mirare label, features seven critically acclaimed recordings. Among these, their latest album, dedicated to Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, places special emphasis on Fanny’s rarely performed trio and has received widespread acclaim. Their recording of Haydn and Hummel earned the prestigious Gramophone Editor’s Choice.
Trio Chausson’s artistic identity is shaped by its strong affinity with both the French Romantic repertoire and Viennese Classicism. The trios of Haydn, with their inventive freedom and structural clarity, remain a constant source of inspiration. Faithful to the spirit of their namesake, Ernest Chausson, the Trio is also committed to rediscovering lesser-known French Romantic works. They frequently perform in quartet formation, collaborating with artists such as violists Manuel Vioque-Jude and Violaine Despeyroux, and clarinetist Joë Christophe.
Curious and committed to reaching wider audiences, the Trio has developed three original staged programs that go beyond traditional concert formats: “Croches Pattes”, a theatrical musical performance for trio and actor exploring the turbulent relationship between Haydn and Beethoven; “Alors, on danse? “, a performance featuring three dancers and a lighting artist that challenges the role of the spectator; and “Planètes”, an intergalactic journey imagined in collaboration with the Ellipsos Saxophone Quartet.
Also known for their passion for transcriptions, they have arranged around twenty works for piano trio, including “La Valse and Rapsodie Espagnole “by Ravel, and Chopin’s “Introduction and Polonaise brillante”. Their large repertoire also features triple concertos by Beethoven and Chausson, including a transcription of Chausson’s “Concert op. 21 “arranged by composer Mathieu Lamboley.
Formed at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris under the guidance of Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Claire Désert, the Trio later joined the European Chamber Music Academy, where the mentorship of Hatto Beyerle played a decisive role in shaping their musical vision.
PRESS QUOTES
“Rare early Debussy, the great but under-rated Chaminade, the unjustly forgotten Lenormand: three French trios take us by surprise with the quality of their inventiveness and beauty. Superbly played.”
BBC Music Magazine
“Delicate yet precise, thrilling but warm, it’s a CD which deserves to bring them further international recognition.”
