Igor Levit, a virtuoso pianist and leading figure on the international stage, returns to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées for the second chapter of his Beethoven cycle devoted to the composer’s sonatas.

Major international venues compete for the presence of Igor Levit, now firmly established among the elite of world pianism. Described by Télérama as “a Mensch, a man of rare humanity as much as of extraordinary musical intelligence”, he is widely regarded as one of today’s foremost Beethoven interpreters. Beyond Beethoven, his artistic identity is deeply rooted in the German repertoire that shaped his reputation. Igor Levit continues here his exploration of Beethoven’s sonatas, following the first recital on 2 March 2027. A monumental cycle, whose complete recording released in 2019 was unanimously acclaimed by the international press.

This second programme brings together five sonatas composed between 1796 and 1810, a period in which Beethoven gradually expanded the classical forms he inherited. From the Op. 14 sonatas, still close to the spirit of Mozart, to Sonata Op. 81a “Les Adieux”, inspired by the departure of Archduke Rudolph as Napoleon’s armies advanced, this recital traces the evolution of the composer’s musical language. A centrepiece of the programme, “Les Adieux” combines expressive intensity, formal invention and pianistic brilliance in one of the most distinctive works of the cycle.

A new stage in this journey through Beethoven’s piano sonatas, led by a pianist whose affinity with this repertoire has become self-evident.
