ABOUT
Mariss Jansons conducts Viennese piano legend Rudolph Buchbinder, in Beethoven’s Second Concerto, before performing the poignant Tenth Symphony of Shostakovich.
The Overture from Euryanthe’s perfectly displays Weber’s full, melodic brilliance from the opera which greatly influenced the development of German Romantische Oper. Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto in fact was composed before his piano concerto no.1, and the composer described it himself as, “not one of my best”. A severe self-asssessment of a fresh, vigorous and charming work. Completed a few months after Stalin’s death, the Tenth Symphony was at the heart of a period of great tension in Shostakovich’s life. Frosty and desolate landscapes, fierce outbursts, and ironic moments punctuate this colossal, highly personal symphony.
Presented in association with the Philharmonie de Paris
