ABOUT THE SHOW

A leading personality in contemporary dance, Angelin Preljocaj is back at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, with two emblematic pieces and a new creation.

Throughout his long creative career, Angelin Prejlocaj has enjoyed drawing on a variety of sources of inspiration including painting, literature, music, politics and religion while constantly exploring the body and movement. For this new appearance at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées as part of TranscenDanses season, he will present his new creation Torpeur and two emblematic pieces from his repertoire. Annunciation, a female duet of great dramatic power, was created by Angelin Préclojocaj in 1995. Inspired by the pictorial tradition of the Italian Renaissance, the choreographer literally illustrates verses from the Bible. Ecstasy and pain are subtly combined in this choreographic encounter between Virgin Mary and Angel Gabriel. The bodies meet, get to know one another, before surrendering to the angelic harmonies of Vivaldi and the more contemporary sounds of the Canadian composer Stephane Roy… In the second part, the choreographer is inspired by the unusual tradition of weddings in the Balkans. To the brilliant score of Stravinsky’s Noces, five couples of dancers combine steps, pirouettes and leaps in an interrupted flow. We witness a dance at full speed, vital, beating to the furious rhythm of unpredictable accents in a frenetic round halfway between folklore and “modern dance”.
