ABOUT THE SHOW
A dazzling program for Evgeny Kissin’s solo recital around Shostakovich.
In a 30-year career, Kissin has now reached a unique level of interpretation, mastering the technical difficulties as no one else to expose the drama, the nobility and the poetry of his performances. Capable of all prowess, he also knows how to handle emotion to give full range to his expression. He is one of those performers whose romantic repertoire is the keystone of their career. A beautiful musical relationship unites the virtuoso and the Parisian audience, that continues to blossom from season to season. A regular guest of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, where he performs each year with great success, the “sacred monster of the piano” is back in 2025 for a new recital. For his return to the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Evgeny Kissin invites us to an exceptional recital, exploring pieces for solo piano by Johann Sebastian Bach, Frédéric Chopin and Dmitri Shostakovich. The Partita No. 2 in C minor is a Baroque masterpiece, combining elegant dances and virtuosity. Each movement, from the elegant Sinfonia to the lively Capriccio, reveals Bach’s complexity and melodic beauty. Chopin’s Nocturnes, imbued with poetry and grace, are masterpieces of intimate piano expression. The Scherzo No. 4 in E major, Op. 54, is one of Chopin’s most complex pieces, combining rhythmic energy with lyrical delicacy. This work, full of contrasts and emotions, demonstrates Chopin’s incomparable artistry in the art of the piano. Sonata No. 2 in B minor is a dramatic piece, reflecting the tumult of its period. The Preludes and Fugues, inspired by Bach, combine tradition and modernity, illustrating Shostakovich’s creative genius. Shostakovich’s Sonata No. 2, composed in 1943, is an intense, dramatic work, reflecting the tumult of his time. Structured in three movements, the sonata combines classical and modern elements, creating a work that is both powerful and moving. Preludes and Fugues No. 8, No. 15 and No. 24, taken from his Op. 87, illustrate Shostakovich’s homage to Bach, while preserving a distinctly modern voice.
Evgeny Kissin’s recital promises a dazzling performance of virtuosity. From Bach to Shostakovich, each piece reveals a unique aspect of the piano, auguring an unforgettable evening for all music lovers.
