ABOUT THE SHOW

Jan Lisiecki, one of the most imaginative and poetic pianists of his generation, presents a brilliant and original program.

Jan Lisiecki’s exceptionally mature playing, unique talent and poetic sensibility have established his position as one of the world’s leading pianists. His international career has already led him to play with some of the world’s most prestigious symphony orchestras (Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco), and to release several acclaimed recordings with Deutsche Grammophon. His mature interpretation, refined technique and natural affinity with the repertoires he performs make him an exceptional talent.

Jan Lisiecki presents here an original and dazzling programme based around the prelude form from Bach right through to Messiaen and Gorecki. The word prelude comes from the Latin word “praeludere”: to prepare to play. In the fifteenth and sixteenth century preludes were used by musicians to check their instruments were in tune before starting to play. They often took the form of an improvised piece without any set musical structure. In the nineteenth century, composers, and Chopin in particular, appropriated the prelude and transformed it into a stand-alone piece often on a virtuoso level. This history is demonstrated over four centuries in a single evening.
