ABOUT THE SHOW
Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott embark on a musical journey from the France of Fauré and Nadia Boulanger to the Estonia of Arvo Pärt and the Brazil of Sérgio Assad, via the East of Shostakovich and Dvořák.
Long-time friends and collaborators, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott are no strangers to programmes in which they move from one composer, style and period to another, picking out pieces here and there to create a journey that reflects their own style and to bring out sometimes new but meaningful associations. After the lockdown, they recorded Songs of Comfort and Hope, inspired by Yo-Yo Ma’s performances on social media, a collection about which they declared: “These are time capsules of our emotions, which may contain lost dreams or forgotten desires, feelings of optimism and unity. At the Philharmonie, they counterpoint sonatas by Franck and Shostakovich with shorter pieces, including Arvo Pärt’s meditative Mirror in Mirror.
