ABOUT THE SHOW
The history of dance in Monte-Carlo and Paris is deeply intertwined with the legacy of Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
1909 marked the first season of the Ballets Russes in France, with the troupe dividing their performances between Paris’s Théâtre du Châtelet and the Salle Garnier at the Monte-Carlo Opera. The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, built in 1913, welcomed Diaghilev’s company from its opening. This initial collaboration became famous for the “scandal” surrounding the premiere of Stravinsky and Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring. For two decades, the Ballets Russes revolutionized ballet in all its forms. The adventure ended with Diaghilev’s death in 1929. It would take more than 50 years until 1985 for a new company to arise in Monaco, inspired by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, who wished to revive the dance tradition in Monaco. In 1993, Jean-Christophe Maillot was appointed choreographer-director, and from then on, the Ballets de Monte-Carlo proudly joined the ranks of the world’s leading companies.
True to its mission to “champion all forms of dance—past, present, and future,” TranscenDanses conceived the idea of bringing the Ballets de Monte-Carlo and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by music director Kazuki Yamada, to Paris for a week of performances rich in symbolism. What could be more fitting than a week dedicated to the Ballets Russes, infused with a touch of nostalgia and vibrant modernity, given the invited choreographers? Jean-Christophe Maillot, Marco Goecke, Jeroen Verbruggen, and Johan Inger will each present their own interpretations of the famous Daphnis and Chloe, Spectre de la Rose, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, and Petrouchka. Four reinterpretations by the finest talents in European dance, inviting audiences to relive one of the most beautiful chapters in the history of modern ballet.
