Based in Vancouver, Ballet BC has spent the past three decades establishing itself as a driving force in Canadian contemporary dance. At the intersection of multiple aesthetics, the company has built a rich repertoire that blends the precision and refinement of classical technique with the bold spirit of contemporary creation. Rarely seen on Parisian stages, Ballet BC’s appearance at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is a rare and eagerly awaited occasion. The company presents a triptych that reflects its identity: daring, free-spirited, and marked by high artistic and technical standards.

The evening opens with Frontier, a new work by Crystal Pite, known for her visceral choreographic language. Her movement rises from deep within the body like a seismic force, rippling across the stage, striking like a wave. With Frontier, she gives form to the invisible, probing the mysteries of the unknown. Next comes Silent Tides, a contemplative duet by Medhi Walerski, the company’s current artistic director. In this mesmerizing dialogue, the ebb and flow of movement evoke the tides—sometimes calm, and sometimes stormy—mirroring the full spectrum of human connection: closeness and distance, tension and release. A more classical variation then unfolds, with weightless lifts, spiraling pirouettes, and suspended arabesques revealing a sensual virtuosity where intimacy where intimacy takes shape through the body. The program concludes with Passing, by Swedish choreographer Johan Inger. A collective journey through the intimate, the piece weaves together anonymity and personal experience. The group forms, dissolves, then reforms under the sway of an unseen force. Each gesture, each flicker of life on stage becomes a lucid reflection of our shared human condition, conveyed through a dance that is both raw and profoundly alive.
