ABOUT THE SHOW

Igor Levit, virtuoso pianist and a defining figure on the international stage, returns to the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées for an enchanting recital program that combines Schubert, Schumann, and Chopin.

International concert halls eagerly compete for performances by Igor Levit, who has firmly established himself among the elite of today’s pianists. Télérama has described him as “a Mensch”—an individual not only remarkable for his humanity but also for the beauty and intelligence of his piano playing. Widely recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of Beethoven, Levit’s passion also extends to the German repertoire that has shaped his career. A regular of the the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the pianist is back in recital with a program that brings him back to his favourite repertoire.
Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat Major, D960, his final piano sonata, masterfully balances grand formal structure with delicate intimacy. Composed just weeks before his death, it evokes a suspended atmosphere where silence holds as much weight as the notes themselves—at once serene, troubled, and profoundly moving. The mood shifts to something darker and more unsettling with Schumann’s Nachtstücke Op. 23. 23 Written following the death of a close friend, these four brief pieces explore a vivid range of emotions, from haunting nocturnal reverie to bursts of fevered intensity, reflecting the composer’s heightened sensitivity. Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58 concludes the program with a brilliant, lyrical flourish. A work of maturity, it marries Beethoven’s formal rigor with the passionate expressiveness of Chopin. A pinnacle of the romantic piano repertoire, it combines dramatic depth with refined, sweeping melodies. This romantic program, moving between expansive inner grandeur and delicate, almost anxious poetry, is brought to life by one of the most distinctive and thoughtful pianists of his generation.
