ABOUT THE SHOW
In 1985, the Lyon Opera Ballet commissioned Maguy Marin to create a reimagined Cinderella. The choreographer, a leading figure of the new wave of choreography sweeping through France at the time, deliberately chose to break away from neoclassical tradition to offer a more contemporary vision.
Updating the original tale, Maguy Marin portrays her Cinderella as a moving and relatable woman who refuses a predetermined fate. Set to Prokofiev’s music, she transposes the famous story into a world of toys and envisions masked performers in padded costumes, oscillating between the grotesque and the poetic, within a set of wooden horses. From this life-sized dollhouse, Marin reveals a theater of feelings and resentments: she disrupts the roles of good and evil and highlights male domination. Far from being depersonalized, the dance gains humanity and renders the characters touching. The enchantment becomes a beacon of hope, teaching us that only courage, merit, and kindness can help us overcome difficult situations.
Having become one of the Lyon institution’s essential productions, this humanist Cinderella will charm both young and old alike.

PRESS QUOTES
This delightful excitement, which is the very essence of fairy tales, runs throughout Cinderella, choreographed in 1985 by Maguy Marin to the music of Serge Prokofiev for the Lyon Opera Ballet. Playing on a childish and naïve tone, constantly interrupted by ordinary human folly, this contemporary version of Charles Perrault’s tale captivates audiences. So much so that this Cinderella, which has since its creation seen over 460 performances and more than ten casts, has become a bestseller in the history of dance.
